4.4 Magnitude Quake Shakes Los Angeles Area
A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck Southern California on Monday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The temblor occurred at 12:20 p.m. PT and was centered in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Widespread Shaking Reported
The quake was felt over a wide area, including downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and parts of Orange County. Residents reported feeling strong shaking and seeing objects falling off shelves.
Initial Reports
The USGS initially reported the quake's magnitude as 4.7, but later revised it down to 4.4. The quake was followed by several smaller aftershocks, the largest of which was a magnitude 3.1.
No Major Damage or Injuries
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries as a result of the quake. However, some buildings in the epicentral area were evacuated and power outages were reported in some areas.
The El Sereno community is a densely populated neighborhood with many older buildings. Officials are urging residents to inspect their homes and businesses for any damage.
