Tributes have been paid to actor Bill Roache, best known for his role as Ken Barlow in the long-running soap opera Coronation Street, who has died at the age of 93.

Early Life and Career

William Patrick Roache was born in Salford, Lancashire, on April 25, 1925. He began his acting career in the theatre, appearing in repertory companies across the UK.

In 1960, Roache was cast as Ken Barlow in the new soap opera Coronation Street. The show was an instant success, and Roache quickly became one of its most popular characters.

Ken Barlow has been through a lot over the years, including divorces, affairs, and even a stint in prison. But through it all, he has remained a popular figure with viewers.

Personal Life

Roache was married twice. His first marriage was to Anna Cropper in 1952. The couple had two children, Linus and Vanya. They divorced in 1974.

In 1978, Roache married Sarah Mottram. The couple had two children, James and Edwina. They remained married until Sarah's death in 2009.

Roache was a keen golfer and a supporter of Manchester United Football Club. He was also a patron of the Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton-under-Lyne.
